For a brand that claims to “empower women’s esteem, recognising that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes”, Dove went spectacularly off-brand with a recent ad.
An online ad showing a black woman turning into white one drew widespread accusations of racism. Many pointed out that Dove had blundered this way before.
The campaign has been removed from Facebook, with Dove tweeting: “An image we recently posted on Facebook missed the mark in representing women of colour thoughtfully. We deeply regret the offence it caused.”
However, that apology wasn’t enough for some. Said one tweet in response:
“You can do better than ‘missed the mark’. Flip + diminishing. Deepens your offence. You do good work. Have been for years. Do better here.”
