Chinese car maker avoids presidential precedent

In news destined to disappoint fans of the US President, Chinese automaker GAC Motor will re-brand its vehicles when it enters the US market next year.

GAC has been selling cars under the brand “Trumpchi” in China for the past eight years. However, to avoid any perceived link with politics, it is now researching potential new names.

GAC’s spokesperson said trumpchi means “legend” and “good fortune” in his home market.

The company sold some 500,000 automobiles in China last year.
